Burnet finishes powerlifting season at the state meet

The Burnet High School powerlifting season concluded during Spring Break.

Sophomore Abby Smith returned to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association state meet March 18 where she finished 14th in the 114-pound weight division by lifting a total weight of 265 pounds, which set personal records for each lift: 250 pounds in the squat, 145 pounds on the bench press, and 265 pounds in the deadlift. A total of 16 lifters competed in the weight class.

“This is Abby’s second year in a row to get to lift at the state level,” head coach Tyler McIntosh said. “She had an awesome day. She went 7 of 9 on her lifts. She ends the season on a very positive note. We are extremely proud of her and her performance.”

McIntosh said Smith understood from the beginning who was her biggest competition.

“She knew going in that she was competing against her,” he said. “That was her mentality Friday. That’s exactly what she did. She (set personal bests) in everything she could and had her best total of the year by 30 pounds. I am extremely proud of her and can’t wait to see what her lifting future holds.”

A week earlier, Jose Rodriguez and Jack Vanaartsen ended their seasons at the regional meet March 12.

Rodriguez finished 11th overall in the 148-pound weight class by lifting a total weight of 925 pounds: 350-pound squat, 225-pound bench press, and 350-pound deadlift. He set a new personal best in the bench press.

Vanaartsen was seventh overall in the 181-pound weight class thanks to lifting a total weight of 1,180 pounds: 430-pound squat, 320-pound bench press, and 430-pound deadlift. He set a new personal best in the bench press.

“Coach (Chase) Burns and myself are extremely proud of how the boys represented Burnet and themselves,” McIntosh said. “Jose Rodriguez battled a hamstring injury and still found ways to better his bench press and compete in a very competitive weight class. Jack Vanaartsen battled in a very tough weight class as well, and had a chance during the deadlift to pull for fifth place and a medal.”
